Erving Fairclough entered UTS in its first year and enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the first year of the war, going overseas in May 1915. His unit was sent to the Flanders front in September and he fought in all the major battles until his death in action the following year. He had been recommended for a commission and was waiting his turn to enter officers’ training class. He is buried in Ridge Wood Military Cemetery in Belgium, along with 618 fellow Commonwealth soldiers.
